These are some photos from the workshop today! I’m so glad to see classical musicians improvising for the first time. They started out nervous but after that felt more confident as we did more trade 4s around the room. I’m also glad that intermediate level improvisers learnt more about the theoretical and historical side of Blues too! I’m thankful for my professors Larry Watson and Julius Williams in educating me about their music through the various African American music classes they had conducted.

Last week I represented Earth Tone Music Academy (ETMA) at Casio Malaysia’s piano launch event. Previously, I got the chance to teach on the Grand Hybrid at ETMA and I’m amazed to see a digital piano having hammers!
The event featured Malaysia’s pianists, Tay Cher Siang and Leonard Yeap, playing both duets and solos of classical and jazz piano.
This was the goofy side of Cher Siang as he switches piano with Leonard mid-performance of “Billie’s Bounce”. I love how they’re always borrowing each other’s improvisation ideas. Cher Siang is definitely a virtuosic pianist while Leonard composition ideas are very melodic which I see it being reflected in his improvised ideas too. Much to be learnt from these two great minds!

Started a Facebook Page to keep myself accountable in writing music! Being out of a conducive environment of a music school, I must find creative ways to never stop writing. Have been getting withdrawal symptoms from composing these days. These are some videos of my previous compositions. If you like what you hear, follow the page!
Watched jazz duo Az Samad and Tay Cher Siang performed at No Black Tie with featured guest Janet Lee. Love their rendition of P. Ramlee’s Getaran Jiwa! So much more to explore on our roots in jazz!
